Dipping Can Alternative

If you aren't lucky enough to find or have access to a tall pillar mold, you can use most any watertight can or pitcher that you don't mind getting wax into.

This mold here is an old hurricane mold about the size of a large coffee can. It's not as deep as the pillar mold, so I can't do as long of torches, but it would do a small one just fine.

If you don't have enough (or want to use all of the) wax to fill the whole can, you can use an old candle dipper trick. Fill the can 2/3 of the way full with nearly boiling water. (180-ish degrees) Then pour the hot wax on top of the water, as before, leaving about an inch at the top.

The wax will float on top of the water. As you dip the stick into the can, it will go through the wax first. As long as the water underneath is not too hot, it will not affect the dipping. When you are done, just let the can cool, and crack/scrape the disc of wax off of the top.

And keep your eyes out for an extra tall pillar mold on Ebay!
