Candle Maker Videos - People Who Make Candles and Love Candles

Chances are, if you're viewing pages on this About.com site, you're a candle maker or someone interested in candle making. Candle makers are a special group of people that, though they come from all walks of life and from around the world, share a common passion for that enigmatic combination of wax, wick, scent and flame. Here is a collection of videos I've found that feature the stories and creations of some of these candle makers. Some are instructional, some are inspirational, they all capture that candle making joy that we all know well.

1. "Hooked on Wax" by Terry Mendoza

A short documentary about the beautiful craft of creating ornately dipped "cut-n-carve" carved candles - You can see what an elaborate setup is required, but she makes it look so easy! They are truly works of art!

2. "Candle Room" by Edward Kavanaugh

This short documentary that follows the making of bees wax candles used in Eastern Orthodox Christian worship. A beautiful film featuring prominent candle maker Peter A. Kavanaugh making dipped taper candles out of beeswax - really shows how much candles and candle light can be part of ritual, reverence and mystery.

3. Ask the Decorator - Scented Candles

Meghan Carter of Ask the Decorator visited Yankee Candle Company and spoke with one of the Senior Vice Presidents about how scented candles can do much more than add ambiance to a room, they can actually change the way you perceive it. They call it creating "Scent-mosphere." You don't have to go to Yankee Candle to do this though - you can create your own "beauty, function and inspiration" by making your own candles.

4. Long Island Candle Factory on "The Big Idea"

A video from the CNBC show "The Big Idea" featuring the couple that created and run the Long Island Candle Factory. Their story should inspire you to go for your own candle making dreams!

5. "Big Dipper" - Sarah van Gameren 2007

An amazing performance art/installation by Sarah van Gameren that features an intriguingly beautiful machine that makes candle "chandeliers" in a lyric, almost dance-like fashion. It reminds me of the real life candle machine that was the inspiration for Cat in the Candle Factory.

6. Gary Purvis: Candle Maker

A nice profile of Gary Purvis, who collects used candles and scraps and then remakes new candles for his church. Here's how you can recycle your own wax scraps to make candles for your church...or just for yourself.

7. Candles - Goodbye Art

Artist Phil Hansen making a painting entirely out of tea light candles. When you buy them in plastic bags of 100 in the store, they seem so cheap and simple...but when you put them together with creativity and inspiration, you realize how a simple thing like a tea light can be quite beautiful!

8. Cut & Carve Candles Demo

Another really nice demo of how "cut & carve" candles are made. It takes quite an involved set up to do this...but, as you can see, the results are really amazing!

9. The Candlemaker

No list of videos about candle makers would be complete without a copy of the 1957 cartoon produced by the Lutheran Church called "The Candlemaker." The cartoon combines the wonder of candle making and the meaning of Christmas - as seen through the eyes of a young candle maker and his father.

10. The Candle Maker at Work

In this video, a group of candle makers demonstrate a technique that's a combination of rolled candle, cut and carve, and molded candle. Some really amazing handmade sculpted effects!
