Let's Get Started Making a Soap Mold Out of a Mitre Box

Soap Molds

The Variety of Soap Molds

David Fisher
Though the soap bug usually bites us all pretty good, don't feel that you have to have the very best of everything until it becomes obvious that soapmaking is going to become a permanent part of your life. Much of the equipment that you need to try soap making, you should already have or can buy inexpensively. I got started with just a stainless steel pot, some scales, and a bunch of yogurt and margarine containers. Those first molds will get you through the a few batches, and then you can decide what you really want to invest in.

One of the first "real" molds that soap makers often want is a log mold. When I was just starting out, I was blowing my budget on wonderful essential oils and fragrance oils, with no funds left for investing in a mold! So what did I do? I made a wonderful mold from a mitre box. If I can make it…ANYBODY CAN! It takes a simple mitre box and adds side inserts to transform it into a log mold. It comes apart so that the soap is easy to remove from the mold, and both the sides of the mold and the ends of the mold can be lifted and removed from the mitre box after the soap has hardened. The 1x2" pieces hold the sides in place and also serve as handles to break down the pieces when the soap is ready. You can even use the mitre box as a guide for cutting the finished log of soap!

Here's what you'll need to get started...
