So...with this in mind, the best wax recipe I've found is basic straight paraffin (I use IGI 1343) with 1 tsp. of Universal Additive added to it. Universal Additive is a versatile (one might even say "universal") additive that helps the wax take more fragrance oil, adds hardness, and adds gloss without affecting the translucent quality of the wax as much as other additives.

Why this combination?
The IGI 1343, or any other straight paraffin wax is a nice translucent wax. It's solid enough for votives or pillars and holds color well. But without any additives, it doesn't hold as much fragrance oil as other blends will - only about 3% - or .5 oz. per pound of wax. For many candle makers, that's enough, but others like a lot of fragrance. The Universal Additive helps boost the fragrance oil holding power of the wax, without sacrificing too much translucence. An added bonus is a nice glossy sheen to the candle.

So, for your chunks, you'll need:

  • IGI 1343 (or other straight paraffin wax)
  • Universal Additive
  • Dye or color, as desired
  • Fragrance, if desired
  • Cookie sheet or baking pan
  • Cutting board
  • Pizza cutter or paring knife
