How Did YOU Get Started Making Candles and/or Soap? What's Your Story?

Monday October 6, 2008
lady with soapOne of the first questions anyone who finds out that I make soap and candles asks me is, "How did you get started?" Everyone has a story. Some needed a better skin care/skin healing solution, others were following in the footsteps of their pioneer grandmothers. I know a few who were just needing something to do with all of the fresh goat's milk they had on hand. Whatever your story...tell it to us. The one thing that all candle and soap makers seem to have in common is an appreciation of scent, care about how things are made, and a true delight in creativity and crafting. What's your story? How did you get hooked? Read other candle and soap maker's stories...and share your own!

I got started making soap when my wife found it difficult to find a glycerine soap on a regular basis. It was actually her idea that I make it for her. I have found it to be a special, romantic gift to give her, and have found pleasure in making for myself and others since then. Since then, I have ventured into making bath salts for the first time, and will probably try other things too.

I, like most candle makers, have always had a love of candles since I was very young. I used to love to dip my fingers in the hot wax when we were fortunate to actually have a candle in the house. They were so expensive and but were never as strong as I would hope they would be.

Still it wasn’t until I was married and had said for the hundredth time to my husband that I wanted to make my own candles. He finally said why don’t you start a candle business. With his blessings I was off. But come to find out most places, like the place we were living at the time, did not allow open flames. I was told I had to stop making candles or move out.

I was devistated! I just got started and now I have to stop. Then I discovered wickless! I have not looked back since!

I am just getting started making natural soaps so I don’t have a story YET! I just wanted to leave a comment to say how helpful your video re: making a lye solution was. Just excellent. It’s the step that always makes me quake (LOL) when I am reading instructions for making soaps. It really wasn’t isn’t that bad or dangerous, if you follow some basic safety rules. Thanks so much David! Hope you get the time to stop by my blog too. G
