woman at devotional candle altarThe recent blog post about my candle project for making your own custom devotional or prayer candles has been very popular. As I've done some more research into devotional and prayer candles, I can see why. I found two articles that explain a bit more about the wonder and mystique of devotional candles. In "Prayer Candles are Popular, Even with Non-believers," the author tells a bit of the history of prayer candles and the story of Peter Doan Reed, who invented the prayer candle in the late 1940s and founded the Reed Candle Company. In the second article, "A Brisk Business in Selling Hope by the Wick," the author tells that "devotional candles are increasingly kindled by anyone with a wish or a prayer, and as a result, they are now a lucrative and growing niche in the $2 billion candle market in the United States." Evidently, the most popular devotional candles are for love, to cause a breakup or for protection from enemies. But whatever the reason you make and light your candles, try making some devotional candles for yourself - and keep the flames alive.
