David's Candles & Soap BlogNatural Colors in Candles - Yes it's possible! There are not many candle-related tips and tricks that I pass on that someone, somewhere hasn't tried before. This one is not quite an exception to that - but I can say that we're on to something here, and that this was a pretty exciting discovery! Natural is popular these days. In soap, many people take pride in only using natural essential oils and colorants. Those practices are pretty common. And with the rise in popularity of soy wax, candles (similarly scented with essential oils) can be "natural" too. A candle maker recently wrote me recently asking if the same natural colorants used in soap making could be used in candles. Hmmmm. I had to think. I knew that pigments and other "dispersed" colors like micas and oxides don't work well in candles because they tend to sink to the bottom of the melted wax and/or clog the wick. But I wasn't sure about an "infused" color. You can make an herbal oil infusion for soap making - and soy wax is just modified soy bean oil - so I decided to try it! Here are the instructions for infusing the wax, - and a step by step photo gallery of the tests. While only a few of the herbs really gave me good color in the wax, the colors I got were really great...and there are many other herbs I haven't tested yet.Monday February 18, 2008 | comments (0) Display Latest Headlines | powered by WordPress |
