Yahrzeit Candles
Tuesday September 19, 2006
I was reading an article about the 5th Anniversary of "9-11" in the USA (In the Diaspora: Five years later) and came across a reference to a type of candle I hadn't heard of - a Yahrzeit candle. A Yahrzeit candle is a candle lit on the anniversary of a loved one's death. It is designed to burn for 24 hours and symbolize the light that the loved one brought into the world and people's lives. They come in many shapes, styles and sizes, from very traditional to fairly modern - even electric Yahrzeits. Here I've covered all sorts of candles and candle traditions and had never come across this wonderful...and wonderfully simple and important tradition. I think it's pretty cool...and just one more example of how deeply rooted candles are into our culture and lives. You can read more about Yahrzeit candles and their traditions at:

The article about the Yahrzeit was really special. My mom family is Jewish and of course I am. My family’s traditions are very precious. Thank you.
