The Wonders of Soap

Tuesday June 13, 2006
Soap StoreHere at About, we sing the praises of making our own candles and soap. We know our creations are better - both more enjoyable, and better for us. A new article (actually a product review for a Gardener's Gift Basket from Alabu, a Mechanicville, N.Y.-based soap company) sang the praises of soap so well, I wanted to pass it on. In it, the author, Stephanie Earls, lists what she believes are the three reasons that hand made soap is superior to grocery store or hotel soap:
  1. The Scent- What is the first thing any of us do when we pick up a bar of hand made soap? We smell it. Our sense of smell has a lot of power over our emotions, memories and well being, so I agree, scent is #1.
  2. The Back Story - While not all handmade soaps have a back story like "being hand-formed by Druid priests from the milk of wild wapiti", many do - even just the fact that you know they were made by a soap artisan out of real ingredients that you can pronounce and may even have in your pantry.
  3. Does it make you feel good? - Soap can make us feel good in many ways - it's scrubby, or bubbly, or creamy. Of course, it gets us clean and moisturizes along the way. And when you combine this with the Scent and the Story, handmade soap is really a pretty wonderful thing.
But then again, we knew that already!
